To kick off the towsports season in the upper Midwest, wakeboarding and boating enthusiasts will, quite fittingly, flock to the land of a thousand lakes in early June for Minnesota Spring Ride 2012.
Sponsored by MarineMax and Nautique, the three-day event featuring exciting contests, product demos and much more will be held on Big Sandy Lake at Big Sandy Lodge and Resort, which is located just two hours north of Minneapolis in McGregor. Wakeboarders will compete for cash, prizes and plenty of Red Bull energy drinks, while fans enjoy sun, fun and a ton of towsports activities.
“We set it up really to bring the wakeboarding community together, to really tighten up that community here in Minnesota and the Midwest,” said Casey Smith, Nautique Brand Manager/Off-Site Sales Manager at MarineMax. “After all of the events everyone can hang out together, get to know one another and ride in each other’s boats. And some people are going to win some money, too, which is kind of nice.”
“The idea that the event, lodging, nightlife and everything else is all at one simple location [is special],” said Adam Palkie of apparel-maker CandyGrind. “It almost carries a festival kind of atmosphere.“
The opening day (Thursday, June 7th) of the second annual wakeboarding event will offer free riding, and exhibition rail riding will take place throughout the entire weekend. On Day 2, the Double-Up Qualifiers, Barefoot, Women's Biggest Grab and Men's Best Trick competitions are scheduled. The winners of the Double-Up contests, Saturday’s main event sponsored by Red Bull, will claim the lion’s share of a $6,000 purse.
“We’re really excited about that. Red Bull is putting a lot of resources into it for us,” Smith said. “It should be pretty amazing.”
Last year, Minnesota native Colin Ryan took home top honors and more than $2,200 combined in the Double-Up Best Trick and Biggest Trick contests, as well as the Men's Best Trick competition. Smith emphasized that Friday’s events are open to everybody ($5 will be the minimum entry fee for a contest).
“Kids can ride behind these great wakeboard boats,” he said. “It gives them a really good chance to get involved with this sport.”
Spectators can try out the latest Nautique boats courtesy of MarineMax, meet with fellow riders, get advice from professional wakeboarders and enjoy thousands of dollars worth of door prizes.
“Smith and his team are a very good group of people — polite, respectful and full of energy,” said Elisa Proulx, owner of Big Sandy Lodge and Resort. “The Minnesota Spring Ride event will be bigger and better this year.”
